This project is about automation of the library management system of the client. The concept is built around a portal system that makes it possible to manage the operations of the Library from any where within and outside the organization’s office environment. The first phase of the project begins with the setting up of the client’s intranet system which we are proposing to be based on Windows server 2003. All the client system should have windows XP Professional. Once we put the network in place, the portal is deployed on the web server and all the users and workstations within the organisation can then have access to the portal application.
The second phase of the project would be to extend the usage of the portal to external users like registered users (patrons) of the library to enable them make reservation of books, check for availability of books and possibly buy eBooks (electronic version of some important documents) which the library may offer for sale especially for the purpose of research. Subscription and purchase of books and other materials will be handled through the integration of the portal with an e-payment system which makes it possible to pay such activities through credit or debit cards.
Notifications could also come up at this phase by allowing patrons (library users) to get notifications on when books are due for return or when reserved materials are available for pick up
